Course Descriptions
• Middle School Health
Middle School Health Education provides the basis for continued methods of developing knowledge, concepts, skills, behaviors, and attitudes related to student health and well-being. This course includes the major content areas in a planned, sequential, comprehensive health education curriculum as expressed in the Indiana Health Education Proficiency Guide: (1) Growth and Development; (2) Mental and Emotional Health; (3) Community and Environmental Health; (4) Nutrition; (5) Family Life Education; (6) Consumer Health; (7) Personal Health; (8) Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Education; (9) Intentional and Unintentional Injury; and (10) Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.

Students are provided with opportunities to explore the effects of health behaviors on an individual's quality of life. This course assists students in understanding that health is a lifetime commitment by analyzing individual risk factors and health decisions that promote health and prevent disease. Students are also encouraged to assume individual responsibility for becoming competent health consumers. A variety of instructional strategies, including technology, are used to further develop health literacy.

• High School Physical Education
Physical Education is a one-trimester course that introduces recreational activities. Areas of focus introduced will including: fitness, individual and team sports. Individual activities may include, but are not limited to: frisbee, backyard recreational games, fitness activities, weight training, yoga, relaxation techniques, badminton, pckleball and roller-skating. Team activities may include, but are not limited to: flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, wiffleball, softball, badminton doubles, and various indoor recreational games.

• High School Health
This required comprehensive health education course provides students with accurate information, which they can utilize to develop healthy attitudes and behavior patterns. Critical thinking and decision making skills are taught and practiced throughout the course as students are encouraged to recognize that they have the power to choose healthy behaviors in order to reduce risks. The topics covered include mental health (personality, self-esteem, stress management, mental disorders, and suicide), family and social health (healthy relationship, violence prevention, sexuality, and diversity), human growth and development (reproduction, pregnancy and birth), nutrition, fitness, substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, tobacco), disease and disorders (infectious disease, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, noninfectious diseases and disabilities), consumer and personal health, personal safety, and community and environmental health.

• Weight Training
This is a more advanced physical education course incorporating the principles of weight training and specific movement patterns to achieve and maintain optimal levels of fitness. Basic knowledge of anatomy structures, strength, endurance and flexibility are discussed along with methods on how to achieve specific fitness goals. In addition students will analyze specific skills/movements for effectiveness and efficiency while practicing proper technique. Students will also determine how to use community resources to promote active lifestyles.

• Project Lead the Way - Principles of Biomedical Science
In the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person's life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.
